I was wondering if any one had any thoughts on bands that may not exactly be prog but, at least at times lean in that direction. I'm thinking of groups like Head East (Never Been Any Reason), Angel (Tower or The Fortune) or even Jim Steinman with his own album or with Meatloaf. |

I'm thinking about Coldplay. Maybe in a couple of years they'll evolve into something more experimental. That's what I hope anyway. Nowadays they're just a "decent rock band". But I still love very much their ethereal sound. That's my biggest weakness when it comes to music, besides complexity of course.

there surely is something wrong with the "prog-influenced" category
when such an excellent prog album as "Oliaz of Sunhillow" by Jon
Anderson winds up in that category! it is high time we categorized
albums and not artists!

Yesterday, Max stated that this was the plan (to tag albums). It just hasn't gone in to affect yet. I'll be glad when it is done as well |

Two bands that I rarely hear mentioned as having some prog-influenced elements are Jane's Addiction and Talking Heads (esp. "Naked", their final album).

I agree whole-heartedly with the Flaming Lips.
While on the topic of "sort of prog" I've been listening a lot to the Beach Boys mid to late 60s output, and I just love it. If you can find them cheap, seek out "Today", "Summer Days (and Summer Nights)", "Pet Sounds", and "Smiley Smile" In terms of chord changes and compositional complexity, it beats the Beatles soundly |

did i just read jim steinman?
this guy is solely responsible for reversing any musical evolution that might have occured. just listen to his bloated, sappy saccarine cabaret pomp bullsh*t and, if you have the time, check how many of his "artists" have used the same song in different periods of time. the fact that they now have a stage musical set to polanski's "dance of the vampires" featuring music by steinman might give you an idea. this man is evil. and he has a plan. beware! |
