An article just appeared at Inner Knot with a photo of the entire "Road to Red" box set.  It's not just a collection of 24 CD's in fancy jewel cases...there's a lot more happening and I can hardly wait!  Here's what it looks like:

For some reason I think the Poseidon title track has never been played live. Not sure what I base this on.

I wish there were more and better sounding recordings of the original line-up. Though I guess the Epitaph albums I got are good enough, and got just about as much live music from that formation as I need. But if only the song "In the Wake of Poseidon" had been played and available by the original formation, that would just be killer. Of course, I have no Idea if it even existed before that line-up broke up... I guess not.

Why do I get the feeling that if someone ever invented a working time machine, Robert Fripp's first thought would be to use it to record old live concerts in order to make more archival releases?

Update:  Inner Knot just ran the charge against my bank acct for my advance order of "The Road to Red".  Could this mean that they're beginning to ship a couple weeks ahead of schedule?  One can only hope LOL

I just received an exciting email from Discipline Global Mobile providing a complete track listing of the upcoming "The Road to Red" box.  They also include the date, city, source, and other details about each recording.

After reading through the email, I wanted to pass along some info.

First, some of the shows were already represented on "The Great Deceiver" box set, though additional songs from those shows will appear in the new box.  As I already have "The Great Deceiver" there'll be some duplication, but the addition of unheard songs from those shows will more than make up for that.

Second, some of the shows have been available as downloads from www.dgmlive.com, but once again, songs not previously available in those downloads will appear in the new box.  I've never purchased any of those downloads so this will all be new material for me.

Third, a couple fun stats.  I counted 21 improv's in the setlists I've never even heard before.  Also, 15 versions of my fave Crimso song Exiles that will be new listening for me Bowdown

Here's a link for anyone interested to see the track list...

Is it mid October yet LOL

The thing about live King Crimson from this period is that this band truly believed in improvisation, and was inventing a new voice for doing improvisation in rock. There is no way this new set could be excessive, because, I am sure if you listen to it, each night will have its own special character.

Ya, I'd only even consider buying a set like this from King Crimson because of their dedication to improvisation.  Not only will there be variations on each performance of the structured songs (Exiles, Easy Money, Talking Drum, Schizoid Man, etc), but we could also be treated to 16 or more new improvisations (along the lines of SaBB, Providence, Asbury Park, A Voyage to the Centre of the Cosmos, Is There Life Out There?, The Golden Walnut, etc) as I believe they did a completely improvised piece at least once every show on this tour.  Should be a lot of great listening.

I have 2 Crimson boxsets and never regretted it  - 8 CDs of pure KC magic

- but I may stick with the 2 disk version in this case. Very nice packaging though!

As for highlights of the box set, USA (the original live release from the tour The Road To Red is drawn from) has been given the deluxe 40th Anniversary treatment: https://www.burningshed.com/store/panegyric/product/340/4996/
This is a good concise representation of the power of the mid-1970s live Crimson.

Oh yeah, but I already have the "Collectible King Crimson Vol 1", which includes two concerts, and one of them is the exact same concert from which USA was taken from, but without the overdubs and the edits (though I believe the newer versions of USA feature the complete songs without edits, but I understand the overdubs remain). So, I'm not really interested in getting that concert again.

Perhaps if they chose the higlights and released is as a double album and a regular album price I would be interested in it.

There actually is a scaled back 2CD version available for pre-order too.

Oh, so this set is actually the remastered version of the Red album. However, while thinking of a highlights version of the album, I was thinking live albums. From this version you showed, what I would be rather interested would be the live Starless song, but I would need to hear it. The thing is, my very favourite version of Starless is a live one, but it is one particular version, the one on "Collectible King Crimson Vol 1, CD 1, which is the one that has the most powerful and satisfying ending, as well as the better structured second half of the song... however, the sound quality could be just a tiny bit better. It's great, though, but if I listen to it next to the version on the second CD of the same album, I can tell the difference of sound quality. I wonder how the one here works.

Doesn't seem to have much live music on it
