it's not prog.
it's just to upset. using skilly things. easy to put them there and there, and it sounds different - gets fans. progressivier than most pop, but the structures are very like each other.
read book "how to use proggy elements to sell out"
see for example r&b, it's often very full of layers.
Well, SOD don't use so much easy layerity, but still they are very childish.
And i listen to zeuhl.
SOD don't upset me. I don't get any wow-feelings. Although I like SOD occasionally very much.
It's funny, "lonely day" (is it the name of the song?) has "acoustic" guitars. Very typical to progressive metal, and metal in general. I just don't get it. Where has all metal gone? (not all haven't gone :) )

Listening to them recently, I just realized how huge an influence Mr. Bungle had on them. Not exactly ripoffs, but the influence is there

Yes, they don't play prog rock or prog metal, but they are progressive.

Just because they're using odd time signatures they are not
automatically prog, I think. I heard some of the latest songs of SOAD
because a good friend of mine hears them a lot and they may have become
more progressive for their case, but they are definately not prog,
sorry.
By the way, this "Banana banana banana terracotta banana banana banana terracotta terracotta terracotta pie"-song is pretty cool... |

Because the issue has been discussed ad nauseam:
The answer has been always exactly the same, NOT REMOTELY PROG.

I concur - Mesmerize is a lot of fun, even if it's not Prog Rock, while Hypnotize sounded like more of the same but not as catchy.

"Mesmerize" isn't prog rock, no matter what some journalist says. There are no advanced compositions or structures on it!
The songs are pretty much standard all the way through and there's no experimentation in any formal aspect - just because one song breaks into a polka, it doesn't mean instant Prog Rock album! "Toxicity" is more complex and advanced an album than "Mesmerize" - and while I might accept "Toxicity" as vaguely Prog-related, it doesn't fit my definition of prog. It's also one of my favourite metal albums of the past 10 years - so I'm not dissing it because I don't like it. Edited by Certif1ed - August 05 2006 at 18:16 |

Even though they're a great band I don't think they belong on this site. People snobbing them should give these two albums a few spins though, I enjoy both releases very much.

They're good, and I've liked them for a long time, but they are not prog metal. They are certainly innovative and different, but only to an extent. I liked the double record they just released, but I think they will never top their self-titled debut.

Very few Deep Purple albums are prog, that's why they're in proto-prog.

let me be sceptic about this... how many Deep Purple albums are prog?
but I agree that SOAD don't fit here, but that's not the reason for me, they are just not prog

Truly, half the bands on this site are not really prog but who would come to this site if they were not here. It is not if a band is prog anymore its that you like this site and would like to see your favorite band on it. I would like to see this site have some integrety and clear out the bands that have the label slapped on them (though we may love them for the same reasons why they are here now) and focus on the "true prog bands" from the progressive rock movement and those directly related to them.
