Josh Homme did guest vocals on a Mastodon track (Colony of Birchman). So, his bands are like prog's wasted second cousins.

Kyuss rule, QOTSA I can take or leave. Neither are prog though, in Kyuss' case I think they're just too stoned to remember to stop playing

I am more familiar with Kyuss than I am with QotSA. I think that they are both good bands. They have a unique sound to me which I guess means they don't sound like any other band that I have heard. To that extent that leads me to think progressive. I am not familiar with what constitutes "stoner metal" so that may have something to do with why it has a uniqueness to me. I am a music fan and not a musician so admittedly I don't know the difference between a 4/4 and an 11/8, etc.... (I have probably just lost any credibility that I may have had on PA).
As I mentioned in my first post, a lot of my confusion lies in my naivety as to what it takes to cause a heavy metal band to jump the hurdle to become a prog metal band, which I know has been discussed ad infinitium in other threads. I am especially interested in seeing what does come about in the prog metal genre to see how the subgenres get subdivided (discussed in yet another thread).
As an example, King's X is considered a prog metal band in every other source I have seen except Prog Archives. I did run across a thread where this was discussed and it was decided that they will eventually fit into prog-related, if and when the collaborators have the time to add them. I except this as a decision made by persons far more wiser and knowledgable then me when it comes to music categorization but it also adds to my confusions as to what it takes to be prog metal.
Thus while listening to the R album from QotSA I heard some elements that were what I felt might be prog and was wondering what others thought. Thank you Mike and others for your thoughts and opinions.

I have failed to see the facination or appeal of Queens of the Stone Age - I've even endured them live and failed to connect - I think it was because I was expecting something extreme and they were quite tame.

I think I like Kyuss more. They seem a bit more consistent, but QOTSA is still good. Don't think there's much prog related material there though.

The Queens are certainly great material, but no prog there. Tracks like No One Knows are 'simple' 3 chord 4/4 beauties.... Especially when playing them with two guitarists, a bass and a drum computer in a too small practise room

Well, Josh Homme is certainly open for any influence, including prog ... but he also tries very hard to do his own thing and not copy other styles.

I haven't heard Era Vulgaris as of yet. I own a couple of the Kyuss albums and a couple of the QotSA albums and their sound is unique to me. I suppose that it is the experimental parts that led me to post this topic. I just finished listening to R, and the last song "I Think I Lost My Headache" ends with a horn section which brought to mind some of the horns that I have heard on VDGG (I have only heard the main two albums of VDGG once each and therefore don't qualify as an expert in VDGG but that is what came to mind during the QotSA horn section).

I'm a big fan of QotSA and I think they're somewhat related to prog ... their music is experimental and even a bit avant-garde at times. But I don't think they belong here ... it's simply too remote a connection.
Era Vulgaris is great BTW ... one of my favorite non-prog albums of the year so far! |

I happen to be listening to "R" from Queens of the Stone Age and I was curious as to PA members opinions on their progginess, as well as their feeder band Kyuss. I believe that they have some progressive tendencies and could possibly fit into a prog metal category, however, I have placed this topic in non-prog music since they aren't in prog archives. When I searched on them to see if they had been discussed before, it didn't appear that they had, but they had been mentioned in some threads as stoner metal. Also, I didn't place this topic in recommendations because I am not recommending that they be added to prog archives because they probably aren't PA-worthy. Quite frankly, this is probably just another genre question, but I have a hard time distinguishing between what makes a metal band prog, and what doesn't.
