For some strange reason, I never got into Fates Warning in the past despite really liking Queensryche. So I just picked up Perfect Symmetry which sounds very much like The Warning / Rage era with something new added, real prog!
The end of "At Fates Hands" is amazing, especially considering it was 1989.
So my question is, where do I go next for more of the prog aspect?

You are quite a fine person, and I am very fond of you. But you are only quite a little fellow, in a wide world, after all.

Try A Pleasant Shade of Grey. Their best album IMO. Disconnected is also great.

If you are looking for the "prog" aspect, A Pleasant Shade of Grey is the answer, great album that becomes outstanding after a few listens. Disconnected is good too and even their last one FWX is quite decent if you give it time. The only album that is well regarded whose magic I have never really detected is Awaken the Guardian, a borefest.

Thanks, seems like Pleasant Shade of Grey is the choice after reading a few old FW threads.

I took some time to like Awaken the Guardian, but now it is one of my fav FW album. But it does sound a bit out of place, I agree.

Try Parallels and A Pleasant Shade of Grey. The former represents the band with a melodic heavy metal edge (very much like Queensryche - even more than Perfect Symmetry), whereas the latter is an extremely progressive concept album. And both are awesome.

I have only one album Disconnected
and enjoyed it a lot. it's very unique in style, mix of metal with subtle ethnic elements and some noise electronics I'd call that "ambient metal" (if such thing exist). Is there some similar in style from other bands? |

OP is on the money. Perfect Symmetry was one of 4 albums that really sparked my foray into progmetal. That one along with Watchtower Control and Resistance, DT's Dream and Day, and Voivod's Dimension Hatross.

No Exit is less proggy, but I don't think you'd forgive yourself if you don't hear it. The Arch stuff is great too.

I was a huge Fates Warning fan in the 80's/early 90's..... I can't stand Pleasent Shade Of Gray
![]() But yeah, Parallels and Inside Out are both fairly Perfect Symmetry-like...maybe a bit more metal though.

I´d say go for this one:
Technically not a Fates warning album, but very close.

I would suggest Inside Out which is a very good album with great atmospheres because I think that it is the nearest one to Perfect Symmetry for its sound, but my favourite overall is Parallels.

^^ oh great albums for sure!! I just feel both Parallels and Inside out aren't albums that demonstrate the peak of their proggiest performances, although they are both great albums and really showed another side of Fates that they could commercialize their sound a bit. Definitely Fates's most accessible albums. How can anyone not love MONUMENT!!!

Monument is fantastic, I especially love the outro even if it has completely nothing to do with the rest of the song

I know!! It's brilliant. What do you think of THE IVORY GATE OF DREAMS? For me, it's one of their best songs for sure. It's also a song that really defined progressive metal in general. So many great bands learned a lot from Fates When they were at their proggiest. ;) |

Thanks for the Arch/Metheos mention. I was listening to tons of FW back
in 2003 to around 2005 and it's good to hear this same voice again doing new things. I had no idea this album existed.

I always found 90s FW quite boring. It's not by playing dissonant notes and odd signatures that you'll get a good prog album. Go with Awaken the Guardian! It has Jon Arch on vocals, good Iron Maiden influences and it's the one that really progresses from the typical 80s heavy metal sound IMO.

^Well as you can see on the frontpage of PAs sister site MMA, it was voted album of the year by the Collabs on that site: http://www.metalmusicarchives.com/. Great album indeed
