I like both, but I am really digging Mastodon at the moment.

Crack the Skye's my favourite album from this sub-genre, though I can't say I've heard a lot of T/E Prog Metal albums.
Still Life is great, too, but not on level with CtS, which is flawless, IMO.

Crack the Skye is a work of art, and I am surprised it is not rated higher than 4.06. It should be at least equal to the rating of Still Life which is at 4.34. Mastodon is less proggy than Opeth because they have less longer epic tracks, but the musicianship is still there. Mastodon's latest The Hunter has nothing really longer than 5 minutes, but it is a solid album.

Crack the Skye. 9/10
Still Life is the weakest Opeth album for me. 7/10

Still Life has the highest rating, but I like Blackwater Park more I think. Would you put Crack the Skye higher than Blackwater Park? I would. I think I just like Mastodon more at this point for the lighter growling.

Nope. 'Blackwater Park' is an ultimate masterpiece for my ears and one of the greatest prog albums released after 1979.

I have no issue calling Blackwater Park Opeth's best album. I actually like Ghost Reveries more than Still Life as well, but I am not sure how everyone else feels about that. However, I just discovered Mastodon, so it is not really a fair comparison for me. I am enjoying them so much right now, so I would need to compare both bands after the buzz wears off.

That Mastodon album is up there with Traced in Air for my favorite Tech metal album. Not a huge fan of the genre in general, but both Traced and CtS are masterpieces.

Wow! Checking out Cynic now. That album is a disappointing 32 minutes, and Focus is 36 minutes. No epics.

Great hooks, impressive lyrics, unique vocals, brilliant musicianship.
Edit: Disappointing?
Woa woa woa there, you don't need 20 minutes to make a great song. I've listened to Traced in Air more than CtS. Can you guess a reason why?

No, I am not being sarcastic. That is the first time I have looked at that group. I need to find a place to stream the albums before I buy them. I am VERY new to this sub genre.

Still Life for me, but I still like Mastodon. Never understood why they're quite so lowly rated on here - none of their albums in the top 20 for Tech/Extreme Prog Metal

I think their only albums "capable" of being rated so highly are Blood Mountain and CtS. The problem is that genre has a lot of competition.

Opeth's Still Life is in my top 3 favorite albums period! Through Crack the Skye is very solid and has grown on me. Vocally is there even competition between Opeth and Mastodon, well at least in my opinion. (though Mastodon's vocals are quite good too) And Cynic rules, glad someone mentioned them. I like Cynic more than Mastodon. Still listening to Kindly Bent to Free Us more, don't know where to put that ranking wise in their albums.
