This subject was brought up in another thread, and I thought it would be a great idea for a poll. Over the 10 albums released between 1976-1987, which of these 20 instrumentals is your favorite?

Let it be said here that many of these feature the English Chorale or some other background vocals/studio voices. My criteria for being included in this poll was "no lyrics included on the album's lyric sheet or no lead vocalist".

"The Fall of the House of Usher" is, for me, the epitome of what progressive rock music is all about. That perfect blending of classical/orchestration & structure with rock/electric instruments. And it opens with Orson Wells! The greatest voice in the history of recorded sound! 

Plus, I love that short story so much!

There's a lot to love here, but I guess overall it's I Robot. The Genesis track is great too, but it somehow feels incomplete... as if it were the guitar solo of a longer track.

Difficult to make a choice between the instrumentals on Robot & Pyramid.

I went for Laps of the Gods

Anything after Pyramids is really not up my alley, even if might still sound like early APP.

I'd include Secret Garden from Eve as well, but I can see how it technically doesn't fit the criteria entirely. After some consideration I went for Fall of the House of Usher. I've never heard the original 1976 non-Orson version of the album btw, so just going on the 1987 remix. I like how it's a very intense and unique song among their discography but still includes a very tyical instrumental (Part IV: Pavane), in the syle you'd see on most upcoming albums.

Difficult choice though...the instrumentals are usually a high point on any APP album. They usually have a very recognizable style, and they were great even on their cheesy 80's albums. In fact, Pipeline and Hawkeye are probably my runner-ups.

Thank you for mentioning "Secret Garden": it's my favorite song on the Eve album simply because it's so different from anything else the APP ever did. Parsons and Woolfson openly wore their influences on their sleeves, and this Beach Boys tribute always elicits a smile whenever I hear it. I thought about including it in this poll, but I considered Chris Rainbow's amazing performance to be a "lead vocal", even if he's not using actual words.

This thread has been up for a month now, and I'd like to thank everyone for participating. I was reasonably sure that the winner would be I Robot or Usher, and I'm glad my first choice (I Robot) has a momentary lead before any future votes that may still come in. I was also very impressed that 14 of the 20 choices received at least one vote. It seems there is still a lot of love out there for these very underrated albums!
