 Topic: Favorite Mahavishnu Orchestra Record?

As always, it's exactly what it sounds like. I'm ready for Birds of Fire to take the crown, but I want to see some thoughts and discussion on this band! GO!

My favourite Mahavishnu Orchestra record is not listed. It's the live album Between Nothingness & Eternity. Of the albums listed, Visions Of The Emerald Beyond is the one most familiar to me, Birds Of Fire is the one I currently listen to the most, and The Lost Trident Sessions is the studio album closest to Between Nothingness & Eternity. I decline to vote for the time being.

Totally fair! I would never have considered the live albums, and I should have included an “Other/I Can’t Choose!” Option/

More in favor of MO Mark II with Apocalypse being my fav. Don't expect it to win this though.

not a fan.. by any stretch of the word fan.. but Raff is .. so I hear these albums. More than I'd care to.. or ever would by choice.
the only album I find remotely interesting is Birds of Fire.. though to be honest.. my interest goes away after the first song on that album
never have really seen the habub about M.O... much like D.T. Supremely talented.. but what counts is what you do with that talent and to these ears.. so little of what they did is even remotely interesting.

The Lost Trident high above the debut and Birds of Fire (never got my hands onto Between Nothingness and Eternity which has to be more extensive and presumably better). Visions of the Emerald Beyond is quite good too but I don't care for the others all that much.

It's hard to choose for me between the first 4 albums, all great albums, with lots of interesting music, and really enjoyable. I could choose either and be happy with it, so I cannot vote for one in particular.

The first two are the best....(been a fan from day one ...saw them in Chicago in 1975) , they are both pretty equal for me . The second has a more laid back approach but it is in no way less accomplished and probably more so, though the first one assaults the senses upon initial listening. Voted Birds but imho either one kicks ass.

Not a big fan of Mahavishnu, as not also fusion commonly, but Birds Of Fire is just great! Between Nothingness and Eternity is also quite good, liked a bit also his collaboration with Santana. Haven´t listened other albums, have to some day.

MO Mark II (otherworldly music beyond genre description) far over Mark I (for me, just good fusion on par to Weather Report, Brand X, Dixie Dregs....)... Visions of the Emerald Beyond would win being more consistent but Apocalypse is mind-blowing, intense and majestic too.

Birds of Fire perfects the sound that was invented on "Inner Mounting Flame." Sometimes, this music is a little too busy for me, but I still appreciate what Mahavishnu Mk I was doing more than the orchestra-augmented, mellower Mk II. John McLaughlin takes what John Coltrane did with a saxophone and translates it into the rock idiom. Birds of Fire is more melodically and compositionally intentional than "Inner Mounting Flame," and really shows off the range of what this band can do.
I always find it interesting that Robert Fripp, when asked to comment on Mahavishnu Orchestra, said that he had to avoid listening to them. The idea was, they were covering similar territory, and to listen and be influenced would derail the music he was exploring in the "Larks' Tongues in Aspic" era.
