I heard one of their tunes on last.fm. Very nice. I have been wanting to hear
more as someone on here said they are similar to Tangerine Dream, who I find totally and undeniably awesome. Are they the same as Ashra Temple. Which Ashra album(s) do you recommend. Sorry I am not using question marks as my keyboard seems to be busted. Nice green font by the way. |

I own a bunch of albums and this band is among my favourites. BTW read: Manuel Göttsching is my favourite guitar player of all time. |

Ashra wich is mostly Manuel Göttsching freaking out in the studio and is in some places like Ash Ra Tempel but as the same time not. Ashra is very similar with Tangerine Dream and to be mostly only Manuel Göttsching alone I must say he's doing that very good. Ash Ra Tempel is not that close to the sound of Tangerine Dream, not IMO though... maybe the early Tangerine Dream. ** I believe the thread starter was talking about Ash Ra Tempel, I hope he did?! |

yes, Ash Ra Tempel were awesome!. However, I prefer Ashra (the
later incarnation of the band), who produced an astonishingly beautiful string of albums between 1976 and 1980 to roaryg: try ash ra tempel's first or second, inventions for electric guitar, new age of earth or blackouts. if you want something even more similar to tangerine dream mid-70s albums get michael hoenig's departure from the northern wastelands, it's an absolute must. of course you should also try edgar froese's solo output (e.g. epsilon in malaysian pale and macula transfer) and klaus schulze. |

Apparently so, look at the picture he included at the bottom of the post: Klaus, Manuel, Hartmut... the first photo in Manuel's official website http://www.ashra.com/photos/7101.htm btw, Ashra is not only Manuel's pseudonym project, like Klaus also did with Wahnfried project... After a couple of solo albums (which are strangely either credited to Ashra or Ash Ra Tempel, albeit no such thing as Ah Ra Tempel existed at the moment!), Manuel hired Lutz Ulbrich and Harald Grosskopf, and later on a couple of other musicians for Ashra project... New Age of Earth and Blackouts are great, dont forget Manuel Gottsching's Inventions on Electric Guitar, another good one! Also there is a compilation called Ashra - Sunrain: the Virgin Years, it captures many highlights.

The Ashra albums, particularly New Age of Earth and Blackouts (as DB pointed out) are as good as the German synth/guitar based prog ever got, and there's also the E2 - E4 and Inventions for Electric Guitar albums, plus things like The Private Tapes and The Making Of..., which hint at a huge backlog of unreleased material by Manuel Gottsching lurking in a vault somewhere. As good as Tangerine Dream were at their peak, Ashra produced much more subtle and finely nuanced albums using much the same set up. Essential for lovers of electronic prog.

I knew that picture from long ago and yes it is Ash Ra Tempel, but posting it here and talking about Ashra... I just hope he talked about Ash Ra Tempel then... Hmmm... maybe you know lots more than me Bilek, I'm not that deep into information conserning who was when, where and why and that kind of stuff. I'm so so when it comes to bandnames, release years and what country it came from, Ashra was mostly Göttsching, I didn't say he was alone... to say it this way: he is the one that make the sound good so if one don't like them you shall blame someone else than him. You seem to know some info Bilek and to be honest I think you'd beat me any day at: Who Wants To Be A Krautonaire? Anyhow, I have more than 1800+ kraut albums and you'll prolly know more than me about all of them, fine with me... then I'm happy for you Bilek, also proud to say the least |

"New Age of Earth" is one of the best records of all time for me!
Gottsching was one of the few musicians of that time (apart form Eno
and Kraftwerk) that knew seriously what to do with a drum machine...
The Detroit techno musicians (Derrick May, Carl Craig et al.) were absolutely in love with "E2 E4". There's even a european dance hit of the early nineties ("Sueño Latino") that was built from a sample from that record. |

I think "Gin Rosé" is also a nice live album! There's Manuel Göttshcing and Klaus Schulze improvising, but the sound is more softer that their early ASH RA TEMPEL works. The lack of drums also make it less aggressive. http://www.progarchives.com/Progressive_rock_discography_CD. asp?cd_id=3587
