![]() Bio: CZYSZY (Marek KRÓL) is a music producer from Wałbrzych, Poland. He started his musical adventure in 2009. His stylistic spectrum, besides retro progressive rock covers genres such as chiptune, rock, metal, hip-hop, indie, pop punk, and groove. His first full length progressive rock album - "Epic May" (written, produced, arranged and tracked over the course of a single month) is a retro sounding record composed of four epic songs, inspired by bands such as ANYONE'S DAUGHTER, SPOCK'S BEARD and THE FLOWER KINGS and features sonic textures that pay tribute to old school prog, with a lot of organ runs, Mellotron-like washes and fuzzy guitars. I'm yet to be fully caught by other pieces (though i enjoyed them here and there, esp. in the sung melodic sections), but have listened some of the http://dwellingofduels.net/artists/czyszy/ as well.
Lost Echo of a Distant Friend stands out and is, or at least suggests, a very special song about mourning which I'd describe like this : Fisrt part being stunned when we learn an event and must announce it to others (that first part would be sung quietly), then "hard blues" part miming action, maybe the informed people gather, then voice mezzo forte, some feelings shared, then a moment alone, then some more action representing dealing with the gone soul, what becomes his home etc., and in the move, stronger emotions and finding words to overcome (superb moment though the voice flickers a bit, given the intensity I miss the drums being busier (sycopations, additional fill-ins like at 4'22, 4'33, 4'51, 5'16, 5'19, ... – apart from that, where does that great drum sound, the snare etc come from ?... sell it to me please !!), then a dynamic part where there's some fun, maybe we go out and drink and forget (the jolly organ line at 6'05, the synth line at 6'19; even with that idea, musically it doesn't fit to the global feel of the piece), then a quieter phase of post-binge, then the overwhelming emotions and despair (it's like a double-edge sword, it is surprizingly emotional, but that saturated voice sort of forces the frame of the piece, and spoils it, so I'd prefer another way to express being over-the-top), then the end of the storm. About the singing: sometimes some sung notes start at one pitch, then immediately corrected, some other notes out of tune (not that often though); the voice flickers too much (I think singing at lower volume will help greatly), and the tone doesn't sound "full", some frequencies are underrepresented, and is somewhat snuffling, though at times it reminds me of Ozzy Osbourne's, which isn't necesssarily bad – I'm curious how much can be improved, but a lot it seems. So it seems to be a very special project. That's all from my place !! All the best... PS: Looking at the album cover I wondered if i'd listen to something like Super Mario tunes. Well ? |
