(Considering this an album by THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION and not a FRANK ZAPPA album)

Unlike "Freak out!", "Absolutely free" shows a more homogeneous style, much more oriented to a Proto- Avant-Prog kind of music. FRANK ZAPPA's discography (obviously including THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION) is labeled on this website under the RIO/Avant-Prog sub-genre and even when Frank ZAPPA didn't have anything to do with the Rock In Opposition movement, bands that were part of the movement such as UNIVERS ZERO and HENRY COW have a lot of the ZAPPA/MOTHERS school (and I'd mention especially this record and "Uncle meat"). Once you get used to THE MOTHERS' humor and very unorthodox kind of music, it is very hard to stop listening to it.

SONG RATING: Plastic people, 5 The duke of Prunes, 5 Amnesia vivace, 5 The duke regains his chops, 4 Call any vegetable, 4 Invocation & ritual dance of the young pumpkin, 5 Soft-sell conclusion, 4 America drinks, 4 Status back baby, 4 Uncle Bernie's farm, 4 Son of Suzy Creamcheese, 4 Brown shoes don't make it, 5 America drinks & goes home, 4

AVERAGE: 4.38

PERCENTAGE: 87.69

ALBUM RATING: 4 stars
