3 stars How can you ignore a musician who hails from "Terra de Fuego" (Land of Fire)? TOMAS BATISTA's first album proper is a generally mellow blend of Latin American folk and prog, showcasing his considerable talents as a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist. This isn't complex by any means, but the only poppy track, "Mariposa", seems out of place among the generally understated approach that, apart from that misstep, avoids the path of least resistance.

While percussion instruments are not prominent in general, what does come to mind after multiple hours of fulfillment is how rhythmic this music is nonetheless, primarily propelled by mesmerizing acoustic guitar, portraying a wide palette of expressions. "Desep Que Puedas Sonreir" achieves the effect through consistent plucking underneath the vocal track, whlle "Just Imagine" strums its way to the subconscious. With its synths and windy moods, "Maktub" might be the most proggy track here, but "Desconocido" would be my pick if I had to choose a favourite, as it blends heavier rhythm guitar into the hypnotic batter. None of this is offered at the expense of melody, which is what makes "Claroscuro" an appealing disk on a variety of levels.

TOMAS BATISTA's first album plays favorably with the light of world music and the shade of prog. Let's hope he attains enough success and positive reinforcement to tweak those proportions in the coming years. 3.5 stars rounded down.
